I received this product very quickly and it was in great shape when I got it. It is a really great product and it really works.
Like other reviewers, I agree that using a cold, slightly firm mango produces best results, but since that is how I like my mango, I have no complaints. Mango prices are low right now, and we are enjoying an abundance of this sweet, tart fruit now that this device has made it less of a project.Oh, and also, the price on Amazon (not including shipping) is about $2-3 less than what I paid in the hardware store. It is slightly oval. I was in an impulsive mood at the hardware store and spied this item and threw it in my cart. So you line up the corer and the shape of the mango, and as you guide the corer downward, it seems to "find" the sides of the hard pit and the blade slides around it on both sides.
I had been considering buying this device through Amazon for a while, but given my inability to figure out the position of the pit in my hand cutting efforts, I figured that using a mango corer like this would result in an even bigger mess. Every time I come out with two beautiful mango halves that can be easily sliced and peeled without the sticky hands and mango mash related to my hand-carving efforts. I was surprised by the fact that the shape of the corer made it easy for me to line up the pit. Yes, there is sometimes a bit of tasty mango flesh left on the pit -- usually at the top and bottom -- but you can get that off by hand if you want. I love mangos but hate the work involved in getting the fruit off of the pit.
I was thrilled with even my first attempt at mango coring, and have gotten even more adept since. I hadn't really paid attention to the fact that most mangos are slightly oval, and many have a slight ridge you can see or at least feel that relates to the orientation of the pit.
So awesome. Amazingly well. But.it works. I actually squealed with delight when I tried it for the first time. I love mangos but was really skeptical of this tool. It looks too small to do the job. Even on a large mango.
I've just recently started eating fresh mangos, and always ended up throwing away a bunch of fruit after cutting it by hand. I purchased this, and it works quite well.A few cons:- The blades aren't the sharpest in the world, so it sometimes takes hard pressure to get it started- It doesn't work for very large mangos -- the seed won't fit through- It takes a few mangos of experimentation before it becomes easy to get it lined up properlyAll in all, I find myself eating many more mangos with this than without it, so it's a win for me.
Contrary to the instructions, I found that it works better for me to peel the mango before using the splitter although peeling first does make the mango a little slippery to hold onto. Works very well and keeps me from wasting a lot of fruit. Highly recommend both. Great product. Easy to use. I'm not really a gadget person, but this Oxo mango splitter and my new Oxo Cherry Pitter w/ splash shield are two winners.
